Working Principle

An AT27C040-12PC is composed of five components: an on-chip Voltage Transient Suppression Diode, a Voltage Detector, a Write/Erase Control Circuit, an Erase/Write Enable Control Circuit and the actual memory array. Working together, these components allow data to be stored and retrieved without the need for power.

The Voltage Transient Suppression Diode provides voltage protection against accidental voltage spikes on the power input. The Voltage Detector protects against brownout and overvoltage conditions, while the Write/Erase Control Circuit and Erase/Write Enable Control Circuit work together to control the write/erase operations of the memory array.

The memory array itself contains 2048-word packets of eight bits each. Each packet has a 1-bit error-correction code (ECC) which is used to detect single-bit errors and to allow for the correction of double-bit errors. Data is stored in the memory array, and can be written and erased under the control of the Write/Erase Control Circuit and the Erase/Write Enable Control Circuit.

An AT27C040-12PC is built to support a variety of protocols, such as Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), I2C, and many other communication protocols.
