It is particularly suitable for small, portable user interfaces such as cell phones, smart phones, handheld remote controls, and other consumer electronic devices or systems that place emphasis on a high degree of accuracy when detecting method gestures and other forms of manipulation or control.
The ATMXT1386XES-CHPSET2 is optimized for finger sensitivity, enabling gestures with a single finger, such as touching, tapping, swiping and cupping. The device supports both self-capacitance and mutual-capacitance sensing, with up to 16 individual electrodes configured to sense a single-finger gesture or as many of 16 electrode\'s linked to support more complex multi-finger gestures. The ATMXT1386XES-CHPSET2 also supports sensing of multiple touches with up to 16 electrodes configured to detect up to four simultaneous touches. It is further enhanced by On-Chip noise suppression for improved accuracy, a wide-band operating frequency of up to 7.25 KHz and a low power sleep mode for extended battery life.
Working Principle
The working principle of the ATMXT1386XES-CHPSET2 is based on capacitive sensing, which utilizes a change in capacitance to detect a touch gesture on the outer surface of the device. Capacitive sensing is a sensing technology based on the detection of a change in capacitance when an interaction is made between a human finger and a conductive sensor element. When a finger is placed close to the conductive material of the sensor, the field strength of the capacitor changes, resulting in a change in capacitance. The ATMXT1386XES-CHPSET2 is capable of detecting such changes in capacitance and responding accordingly by signalling an interrupt to the microcontroller when a change is detected.
The device works by measuring the self-capacitance of a single electrode or, if configured to do so, the mutual capacitance between two electrodes. Self–capacitance is the capacitance between an electrode and the user’s finger. Mutual capacitance is the capacitance between two electrodes, one of which is the user’s finger. These two capacitances are measured and the change caused by a touch is detected and reported back to the microcontroller.
The ATMXT1386XES-CHPSET2 is optimized for low power operation, enabling it to remain in a low power sleep mode when not in use. When activated, the device can quickly and accurately detect up to 16 electrodes and detect up to four simultaneous touches. An on-chip noise suppressor further improves the accuracy of measurement. Additionally, the device supports edge filtering and automatic drift control to minimize false touches and detect efficient edge motion.
In addition to low power operation, the ATMXT1386XES-CHPSET2 also includes advanced features such as on-chip gesture detection, dynamic sensitivity adjustment, baseline reset and low latency to ensure a fast and smooth user experience. The device includes an on-chip oscillator, eliminating the need for an external crystal oscillator, and supports a wide frequency range of up to 7.5Khz.
