This voltage is used to drive the XO, a metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) transistor that forms the oscillator core. The MOS transistor is also used to respond and control the frequency of the oscillator.The start-up circuit consists of a dedicated capacitor, a temperature sensor and a delay line. The capacitor is charged and discharged depending on the applied voltage. When the voltage is below a certain threshold, the capacitor begins to discharge into the delay line and the temperature is sensed by the temperature sensor. The reading from the temperature sensor is then converted into a precise voltage allowing the capacitor to be charged. The delay line acts to smooth the voltage transitions and results in an accurate and temperature stable source for the XO.The XO itself is responsible for providing the oscillation and frequency stability. The MOS transistor in the XO is typically connected in two ways; either in a classical Miller configuration or in a current feedback configuration. In the Miller configuration, the MOS transistor is connected in a feedback loop to produce the desired oscillations. When the voltage is applied to the transistor, current flows through the transistor creating a voltage difference. This difference modulates the current and allows the transistor to oscillate and generate the desired square wave.In the current feedback configuration, the MOS transistor is connected to both a bias voltage and a reference voltage. The voltage drop across the MOS transistor is compared to the reference voltage to determine the transistor’s current. This comparison allows the transistor to respond accurately to the reference voltage and generates a stable output waveform.The ATS124 crystal oscillator is capable of providing high frequency accuracy and precision with temperature stability over a wide range of operating conditions.
