A TVS diode, also known as a Transient Voltage Suppression diode, is a two terminal, high conductivity semiconductor characterized by their low forward voltage drop and high peak surge current capability. A TVS diode has two primary functions in an electronic circuit. One, it is able to provide protection from overvoltage transients and high energy surges such as electrostatic discharge (ESD) and inductive kick-back. Two, it is able to protect the circuit itself by clamping off excess voltage.
