AZ23C12-TP is a type of high voltage diodes commonly used in electronic circuitry as a protective device. Description

The AZ23C12-TP series is all-surface mount, surfacemountable miniature diodes which offer enhanced transient- and ESD-protection capability with a rated voltage up to 12V combined with a low capacitance as well as high bonding quality and high surge-handling capability. It is designed to protect sensitive electronic devices from electrostatic and transients. The AZ23C12-TP diodes provide an electrostatic discharge protection capability of up to 8KV contact discharge and 15KV air-gap discharge.

It contains two zener diodes connected in series in an SOT-563 package, providing a bidirectional protection capability. The maximum rated power of each diode is 5W, and the total maximum power of the two connected diodes is 5W. It is designed to work in the temperature range of -55 °C to +125°C.

Working Principle

AZ23C12-TP diodes have a self-protection mechanism activated when the voltage across the diode exceeds its breakdown voltage. When this happens, the diode begins to conduct, allowing an excess of current to flow through it in order to reduce the voltage. This significantly reduces the risk of damage to sensitive electronic components from voltage spikes and ESD transients.

The two zener diodes connected in series are designed to work in combination in order to provide enhanced protection. The zener diodes operate in avalanche breakdown mode. When the voltage across the diode exceeds its breakdown voltage (typically 12V in this case), the diode begins to conduct and the excess current is diverted away from the sensitive component, thus providing overvoltage protection. The two diodes also act as ESD protection devices in that they can absorb high surge energies without suffering any damage.
