B25620B1577K203 Working Principle
The main purpose of a film capacitor is to store energy, temporarily, and to filter out unwanted high-frequency noise. Unlike electrolytic capacitors, which are based on two capacitor plates separated by a liquid electrolyte, film capacitors use a film of plastic as the dielectric with two plates of metal – one plate on either side of the dielectric.When a voltage is applied across the terminals of a film capacitor, the electric field generated through the metal plates causes electrons to move from one plate to the other, creating an electric field around the dielectric. This electric field is then stored until the capacitor is discharged – either manually or from an energy source.The main advantage of a film capacitor is its large capacitance. Since the dielectric of a film capacitor is much thinner than that of an electrolytic capacitor, it is able to store more charge for a given area, resulting in a higher capacitance.
