Temperature Sensors - NTC Thermistors, such as the B57471V2223J062, are used to measure temperature in a variety of different applications. The way in which these sensors work depends on the functional principle to which they adhere: the resistance of an NTC thermistor increases as temperature decreases. In other words, when a temperature increase occurs, the NTC thermistor will exhibit less resistance. This temperature-resistant behavior of the thermistor allows it to be used in two different kinds of temperature sensors: thermistors with voltage applied and thermistors with current applied.

NTC thermistors with voltage applied are commonly used in temperature regulators, in heating and cooling applications. Essentially they are designed to measure the temperature at a specific point and then regulate the associated temperature accordingly. The thermistor is connected to the temperature control circuit either directly or via an amplifier circuit. The voltage produced by the thermistor is then compared against the reference voltage generated by the temperature-control circuit. As the temperature changes, the resistance of the thermistor will change. This changing resistance affects the voltage produced, and will in turn affect the reference voltage from the temperature-control circuit. Based on the difference between the two voltages, the temperature-control circuit will adjust either the heating or cooling component of the system. This feedback loop is how temperature regulators are able to maintain precise temperature control.

NTC thermistors with current applied are generally used in applications where temperature needs to be measured at a specific location, but the temperature control is not actively regulated. This type of thermistor can be connected to an electronic circuit to give an output which is proportional to the temperature. These thermistors can be used in a variety of ways, including for temperature-monitoring and data-logging systems. Typically, they are connected via an amplifier circuit in order to obtain a higher signal-change for a given temperature change.
