Working Principle

The working principle of single rectifiers relies on diodes’ effect of rectifying an alternating current. It usually consists of two rectifying diodes, connected in either a parallel, or a series circuit depending on the necessity of producing either a full-wave, or a half-wave rectifier. When the positive cycle of the AC source is applied to the input side of the device, it becomes forward biased and current starts to flow through the diode, being present on the output side at one terminal of the load. Upon switching of the direction of the AC source, the diode becomes reverse biased, and the current is blocked. This allows load to be powered with a unidirectional, or pulsating direct current.

Owing to these features, single rectifiers are commonly used in automotive applications, where they power small and low power circuits, including ignition systems, dashboard lights, alarms, brake lights and many others. Moreover, single rectifiers are often employed in freewheeling, to suppress the generation of high voltage spikes caused by the sudden collapse of a magnetic field, which results from knowledge of inductive loads when their coils are connected to a source.
