BAT54S Application Field and Working Principle

The BAT54S is a high-frequency surface mount schottky diode array suitable for various applications such as general hot-switching circuits, step-down power switching applications, and low-side sensing circuits. The device displays a typical forward voltage of 0.45V at 0.15A, typical reverse recovery time of 8 ns, and a maximum peak reverse voltage of 30V. The 5-pin bat 54S is housed in a small SOT-23 package and is meant for easy assembly on p.c boards. Below, we explain in detail the application field and working principle of BAT54S.

Application Field

The application field of the BAT54S is quite large, considering its highly efficient power transduction. The device can be used in general hot-switching circuits, step-down power switching applications, and low-side sensing circuits. Furthermore, the lack of P-N junctions–due to its Schottky diode construction–allows for a lower forward voltage than traditional rectifiers. This is why BAT54S is well suited for so many applications. Typical applications include automotive electronics, consumer electronics, communications, space and military electronics, and medical electronics.

Working principle

BAT54S is a 5-lead single-phase rectifying bridge arrangement used to convert alternating current power to direct current power. The device consists of two Schottky diodes mounted in a configuration that allows current to flow in both directions. The anode of each diode is electrically connected to the cathode of the other diode. When a sufficient reverse voltage is applied to the device, no current will flow. However, when a positive voltage is applied to the anode of one diode, current will flow from that diode to the other.

The major advantage of BAT54S is its low voltage drop, which significantly reduces power loss during power conversion. This makes the device highly efficient and able to handle high voltages. Furthermore, BAT54S is also extremely fast, which makes it suitable for high-frequency rectification applications. In addition, the device features a thermal protection feature which prevents overheating and shuts down the device when it reaches a certain temperature.
