PTC Resettable Fuses - BBRF750 Application Field and Working Principle

PTC resettable fuse, more commonly referred to as BBRF750, is designed for either overexposure or over-current protection. BBRF750 is specifically designed to detect excessive current and off-state voltage of up to 750V. When this enhanced functionality is incorporated into products, the end-result is a device that offers both superior protection and performance for a variety of applications.

The BBRF750 device relies on Polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTCResettable) circuit protection. PPTC devices, when subjected to an over-current condition or surge, will change its resistance from a low-impedance state to a higher-impedance state within a fraction of a second. The result is a rapid interruption of the flow of current. Another benefit of this function is that it prevents load terminals from being singed, melted, or damaged.

Once the protection circuit is in an over-current state, an operator must take action to reset the device. This reset action requires the power to be switched off when the current is below the required specification. Once the power is cut, the fuse will cool and reset automatically. This makes BBRF750 ideal for customers requiring a high-performance, yet cost-effective solution that minimizes downtime.

BBRF750 Application Fields:

  • Medical Equipment
  • Industrial Automation
  • Consumer Electronics
  • Automotive Electronics

BBRF750 is typically used to protect expensive equipment including electronic control boards and other products that are prone to over-current or voltage events. The device can be used in a variety of environments due to its ability to stand up to temperatures ranging from -40°C up to +105°C.

Working Principle of BBRF750:

BBRF750 relies on a PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) resettable fuse, which contains a special polymer material with a positive temperature coefficient. When the device is subjected to an over-current condition or surge, the material in the fuse will change from a low-impedance (on-state) to a higher-impedance state (off state). This causes a rapid interruption of the flow of current and prevents the load terminals from being damaged. Once the temperature returns to its normal level, the material will return to its low-impedance state and the device is reset.

BBRF750 also features a layer of self-suppressing Foam and Fusible materials inside the device. The foam acts as an isolation layer to protect against shock or vibration and helps to minimize electrical arcing. The fusible material helps to reduce thermal runaway conditions by allowing heat to dissipate more evenly throughout the device.

Conclusion

The BBRF750 resettable fuse is an effective device for both ovre-current and voltage protection. It offers a rapid response time when an over-current or surge is detected and it can easily be reset when the power is cut and the device has cooled. BBRF750 is well-suited for a variety of applications, including medical equipment, consumer electronics, industrial automation and automotive electronics. The device also features a layer of self-suppressing foam and fusible materials that help to increase the life of the device and minimize electrical arcing.
