Variable Capacitance Diodes

Variable capacitance diodes, also known as varactors, varicaps, or tuning diodes, are special type of semiconductor components that are used predominantly in high-frequency applications. Specifically, variable capacitance diodes are constructed using a p-n junction that are used to induce variable capacitance when a particular amount of reverse bias voltage is applied. Working Principle

A variable capacitance diode, when exposed to an electric field, induces a change in the capacitance present between its two electrodes known as the plates. If the electric field is reversed, the control voltage applied to its external terminals also reverses and this results in a reversal of the capacitance produced between the two electrodes. This type of diode is constructed using a semiconductor substrate and two separate semiconductor layers for the anode and cathode electrodes. The BBY5602WH6327XTSA1 is a silicon epitaxial-base junction varactor diode. An epitaxial structured silicon layer is diffused with impurities to form the junction.

The internal capacitance of a variable capacitance diode is dependent on the reverse bias voltage and the amount of impurity diffusion that takes place in the epitaxial layer. When the reverse bias voltage applied is increased, the internal capacitance of the diode is also increased.
