Electric Double Layer Capacitors (EDLC)
Electric Double Layer Capacitors (EDLC) are sometimes referred to as supercapacitors. EDLCs are electrochemical capacitors with very high capacitance values that provide excellent power density and low ESR. EDLCs excel at high power operations, and are now being used in a variety of applications where high power density and low energy storage are required.EDLCs consist of two electrodes, usually carbon, and a separator that forms an electrolytic solution. The charge is stored and discharged through electrochemical reactions which occur when the EDLC is operated. The EDLC uses ion-selective membranes to store ions, and these ions migrate from one electrode to the other forming a double layer of ions around each electrode. This forms a high charge capacity allowing for a very efficient energy storage capabilities.The low equivalent series resistance (ESR) and high capacitance of an EDLC allows them to have an incredibly high power density. This type of capacitor is ideal for applications that require bursts of power for short time periods. These supercapacitors are also able to charge up rapidly and discharge quickly, making then well suited to energy harvesting and recycling applications.One of the main applications of EDLC is in providing energy storage for renewable energy sources. When solar panels or wind turbines produce energy too fast, the energy needs to be stored for use later on.
