Film Capacitors

Film capacitors include Polypropylene film capacitors, Metallized polyester capacitors and Metallized polypropylene capacitors. They vary in their category of construction, type of dielectric, and application. Despite their apparently large difference in operating values, these capacitors represent one important family of types. The BFC2370EB184 is one of those capacitor types and is most commonly used in small signal applications since its value usually ranges from 0.001uF to 2.2uF and with voltage ratings up to 630Vdc. It is a rectangular capacitor that features a metallized polypropylene film with a polyester tape outer wrap, all covered with an epoxy resin coating.

Working Principle

Just like other film capacitors, the BFC2370EB184 works on the principle of electrostatic capacitance, where electric charge is stored in the electric field between two metal layers separated by an insulating thin film. Both the metal layers are isolated from each other and are connected to the outer terminal at each end. Current flows through these two electrodes when a voltage is applied to the terminals and stored energy in the form of electric field is created between them. The dielectric material between the two metal layers reduces the flow of current, thereby acting as a barrier to the flow of electricity and creating the capacitance.

The BFC2370EB184 contains metallized polypropylene and polyester film as its dielectric materials. Both of these materials are each made from alternating layers of polypropylene and polyester film which increases the capacitance of the device and also acts as an insulating barrier, because poly propylene is very resistant to dielectric breakdown. This allows the capacitor to perform better in high-current applications and enhance its overall electric performance.
