Film Capacitors
Film capacitors, also known as plastic-film capacitors, are an economical type of capacitor and an important component used in many electrical circuits. They are manufactured by evaporating a dielectric (insulating) material on to a film of plastic, usually polyester or polypropylene. The plastic film acts as the dielectric, while the other component of the capacitor, the electrodes, are bonded to that dielectric and to the leads.
One type of film capacitor, BFC2370FI104, is a flat ceramic capacitor. Its characteristics include non-polarity, over-voltage protection, and a low equivalent series resistance (ESR). The capacitor is most commonly used as an input filter in commercial applications where higher voltage needs to be controlled in order to ensure even and consistent functioning. These capacitors are also utilized for bypass and decoupling purposes.
BFC2370FI104 capacitors provide high levels of voltage insulation and excellent frequency characteristics, making them suitable for EMI suppression in high-frequency circuits. In the majority of cases, the capacitor acts as a filter, beginning to suppress the noise at frequencies below that of the cut-off frequency. The capacitance of such capacitors will remain constant in most situations, while their inductance and conductance will change. The operating temperature range of these capacitors extends from -25°C to +85°C.
Working Principle
Film capacitors work in the same basic way as other types of capacitors. They pass an alternating electric current in one direction, but block it from passing in the other. This can be used to store electrical energy, or to reduce voltage or power fluctuations. It can also be used to cause an electrical circuit to oscillate.
A film capacitor consists of a metalized plastic film (usually polyester, polypropylene, or polystyrene) with metal electrodes on either side. When electricity is applied to the capacitor, a relatively small electrical current passes through it. This current causes a charge to accumulate on the metal electrodes, which acts as an electrical storage device. The charge on the metalized electrodes can be varied by changing the voltage applied to the capacitor, or by changing its temperature.
In its simplest form, film capacitors can be used to store electrical energy or to reduce voltage or power fluctuations in an electrical circuit. They can also be used in more complex circuits to perform more functions, such as filtering or voltage smoothing. In these cases, the film capacitor is used in combination with other components, such as resistors or inductors.
Film capacitors can also be used as part of an oscillator circuit. In this type of circuit, a current is applied to a capacitor, which causes a voltage difference between the two metalized electrodes. This voltage difference can cause an electrical current to rise and then fall repetitively, creating an oscillating electrical signal.
