Motion Sensors - IMUs (Inertial Measurement Units), which are employed to measure and provide information about an object’s position, orientation, and linear/angular velocity, can make use of the BHI160 Chip (BOSCH micro motion sensor for easy and convenient applications) that offers essential features for a range of motion sensing applications. It is a three-axis, low-power accelerometer and gyroscope combination that provides acceleration, angular rate, and magnetic sensing.
The BHI160 main application fields are:
- Smartphone motion sensing
- Game motion sensing
- Sports motion sensing
- Health-care mobile devices
- AR(Augmented Reality) and VR(Virtual Reality) applications
The BHI160 working principle is based on MEMS technology. The internal sensing element is a combination of a linear accelerometer, a gyroscope, and a magnetometer that is constructed on a single die, and which is utilized to measure both linear and angular motion. When a force (such as gravity) is applied to the accelerometer, the capacitive sensing element is deformed, which leads to a change in the capacitance. This change is then measured and used to determine the acceleration along the axes.
The gyroscope measures the angular rate (or rate of change of angular position over time) in the x, y, and z axes. An oscillator produces a signal whose frequency is proportional to the angular rate. This signal is then measured to calculate the angular rate.
The magnetometer is used to measure the magnetic field in the x, y, and z axes. Its working principle is based on the electromagnetic induction phenomenon, wherein the current passing through the coil induces a voltage thanks to the magnetic field generated by the Earth’s magnetic field. This voltage is then measured and used to determine the strength and direction of the magnetic field.
The BHI160 can provide a wide range of features such as: accurate motion sensing capability, low power consumption, absolute orientation, low noise, low latency, low power operation, high performance, wide sensing range, flexible power management, and wide temperature range.
The BHI160 is a versatile sensor that can be used in a variety of applications such as fitness tracking, mobile devices, robotics, gaming, virtual/augmented reality, drones/quadcopters, medical devices, and automotive systems. The chip offers essential features for motion sensing applications and is suitable for use in a variety of environments and applications.
