IMUs, or inertial measurement units, are motion sensors that measure a variety of outputs. The BMC050 application field and working principle belongs to this type of technology. The BMC050 module is a highly-integrated 6-DOF IMU with an integrated temperature sensor. It provides excellent acceleration tracking with low power consumption. With a temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C, this IMU can be used in extreme temperature environments.
The BMC050’s working principle lies in the integration of motion data from the three sensing modalities. The accelerometer measures acceleration in three directions (x, y, and z), the magnetometer measures the direction and strength of a magnetic field and the gyroscope measures angular rate and orientation in three directions (roll, pitch and yaw). By combining this data into a single unified measurement, the IMU is able to accurately detect changes in orientation, acceleration and angular rate. The temperature sensor is used to detect changes in temperature and make corrections to the measurement output.
The IMU module is designed to be used in combination with an external processing unit, such as a microcontroller. The module uses a standard 2.54mm pitch connector and supports a wide range of I2C or SPI communication protocols. The module supports a wide range of packet types, such as accelerometer data packets, gyroscope data packets and temperature data packets, which can be sent through the I2C or SPI interface.
