Working principle

BMG160 consists of a MEMS (Microelectromechanical System) gyroscope tailored to measure the rate of rotation around the x and y axes. MEMS gyroscopes work by exploiting the principle of angular momentum, and they enable extremely precise measurement of rotational displacement, acceleration, velocity, direction, and angular rate of motion in 3 dimensional space. In the BMG160, a vibrating element is placed at two orthogonal axes in order to measure the acceleration caused by the movement, and this acceleration is further converted into angular velocity by an analog front-end IC.

The angular rate measurement of the BMG160 can be calibrated by its proprietary auto-calibration mode that compensates for temperature and other external influences. What’s more, the BMG160 also utilizes low-power mode, ultralow-noise mode, and sleep mode, allowing it to consume up to 3x less current than other similar devices. These features make the BMG160 an ideal choice for motion sensing in a wide range of industries where precision is of the utmost importance.
