PMIC - Battery Management

The BQ24308DSGR is a battery charge management integrated circuit (PMIC) with high efficiency and low-cost solution designed to fast charge and maintain a Li-ion battery. The BQ24308DSGR provides current and voltage regulation in applications such as digital cameras, portable media players and medical products. It is capable of delivering up to 2.2A charge current to the battery and includes an integrated DC-DC boost regulator.

Application Field

The BQ24308DSGR is ideal for portable and hand-held applications where low power consumption, space efficiency and high performance are needed. It can be used to charge single cell Li-ion and lithium-ion-polymer batteries in portable applications, such as PDAs, cellular phones and MP3 players. The charger requires minimal external components and provides protection against over-charging, over-discharging, over-voltage, reverse current and short-circuit fault conditions.

Working Principle

The BQ24308DSGR is composed of two core functions, a linear battery charger and a buck converter. The charger is an unregulated linear charger with a single stage regulation that controls current and voltage. Its input voltage range is 3.3V to 5.5V and its output voltage range is 4.2V to 4.35V, with a charge current of up to 2.2A. The buck converter is capable of outputting up to 5A of power and has a programmable input voltage range of 3.3V to 20V. It is also capable of performing a "precharge" operation where it will charge the battery to 3.5V.

The BQ24308DSGR also includes many built-in protection mechanisms such as over-charge and over-discharge protection, over-current protection, and thermal shutdown. A wide range of programmable options is available to further improve the protection system, and an on-chip ADC allows for accurate monitoring of battery voltage and current. The BQ24308DSGR also has integrated circuit blocks that provide a high degree of fault diagnosis and flexibility, allowing for user-defined criteria to be set to minimize the possibility of incorrect or unsafe operation.
