Evaluation and Demonstration Boards and Kits which are increasingly becoming popular are used to build and test prototypes as well as to display, market and demonstrate products or concepts. One such example is the BQ27741EVM (Evaluation Module Board) which is used to evaluate the performance of the BQ27741 multi-chemistry Fuel gauge IC (Integrated Circuit). It is designed to enable designers to rapidly assess the various features of the BQ27741 IC.
The BQ27741EVM is an open-top board which incorporates a form-factor for a three-cell battery stack within its confines, along with accessory circuitry for monitoring the battery cells and communicating data related to the battery cells. The EVM also contains self-test functionality that monitors the status of the battery via I2C communication. The multi-chemistry Fuel Gauge IC inside the board simplifies support for Li-Ion, Li-polymer, LiFeS2 and other common chemistries by providing a single communication interface.
The BQ27741 Fuel Gauge IC measures and monitors cell-voltage, temperature, and other relevant parameters within the battery. The user and system interface of the chip is vast and incorporates A/D conversion, temperature monitoring, temperature compensation and system interface along with other features. The board works in two modes: autonomous and user-interactive. In the autonomous mode the board is placed in its own environment and runs automatically whereas in the user-interactive mode, the user can control the overall battery performance through standard I2C commands.
The BQ27741EVM application field effectively spans multiple sub-fields such as medical, portable consumer, industrial/energy and automotive segments. The application board is used for prototyping and testing various battery-powered designs targeting these segments, making it a versatile tool for designers. It is also used for resolution of various issues with batteries such as detecting any issues with the battery cells and ensuring expected run-time of the product in different scenarios. Many industries have quickly deployed multiple prototypes of this EVM to field test battery-powered applications.
In addition to the Fuel Gauge IC, the BQ27741EVM board also contains supporting circuitry such as a power on reset circuitry, Serial I2C interface, reset circuitry, comparators and voltage detectors. While most of the integrated circuits on the board are regionally independent, regional variations of the Fuel Gauge IC have been incorporated to make it compatible with various battery chemistries and cell counts. The board also contains a balance loop that controls the charge/discharge current levels from the charger source.
The EVM also features the CTM (Cell-To-Moudle) Technology from Texas Instruments which provides dynamic cell optimization. This technology enables the Fuel Gauge IC to detect issues with the battery cells early on and allows load balancing between cells before they reach an end-of-life state. The CTM is implemented using a dedicated microcontroller and advanced algorithms embedded in the chip.
The BQ27741EVM board is designed to accommodate wide range of chemistries and cell counts ranging from 2 to 6 cells. This keeps the power source within acceptable current levels and helps detect and resolve issues with the cells before they cause damage to the rest of the circuit. The board also contains a dedicated connector for connecting external charging solutions as well as a debugging port which allows the user to access data at the debugger.
The board also contains numerous connections and test points for interfacing the board with other components during prototype development. This includes connections for external temperature sensors, current sense resistors, voltage dividers, 5-V enable pins, charge signals and ground lines. Users can also use the debugging port to analyze the detailed behavior of the battery cells while performance testing.
The board includes an off-the-shelf software package which contains all the necessary information required to configure and use the board. The included software contains step-by-step instructions on how to use the EVM, which makes prototyping much easier. In addition, the software also contains relevant configuration data which can be accessed and modified according to the desired application.
