Texas Instruments’ BQ30Z554DBT-R1 is an integrated battery management system (BMS) and cell monitor IC. It is part of TI’s family of quasitopology-based battery management solutions.

The BMS helps to manage and monitor battery power, safety, health and performance. It addresses the differentiated needs of automotive and industrial Battery Management System (BMS) applications. It has been designed to meet the requirements of Li-Ion and LiFePO4 battery packs with up to 12 cells in a series.

The BQ30Z554DBT-R1’s rich set of features makes it ideal for use in PMIC – Battery Management applications. These include overvoltage and undervoltage protection as well advanced battery state of charge (SOC) monitoring and reporting, stacking energy, and battery balancing.

Additional features include an analog watchdog that detects high current, overvoltage and high temperature conditions and sets off an external shut-down if necessary. The system supports inrush current limiting, cell balancing and advanced sleep modes to reduce system power consumption. Furthermore, the device can be programmed to support more than 16 different chemistries and up to three charge profiles.

The working principle behind the BQ30Z554DBT-R1 is based on a series of internal micro controllers and voltage and current sensors, which together provide safety, charging and cell data to the host with the help of a dedicated battery management linker.

The BQ30Z554DBT-R1 also provides a range of intelligence, from cell overvoltage and undervoltage protection, to the monitoring and reporting of the battery’s health, protection and performance. It can also be used in combination with TI’s wireless, wireless charging, and app-enabled modules to enable communication between the battery, charger and other components.

The device also provides an integrated solution for stacking energy and automates the state of charge (SOC) to reduce the energy needed from other components. It also features advanced battery state-of-charge, temperature, age and performance estimation algorithms.
