1. Describe

The bq77PL900 is a 5 to 10 series Li-Ion battery pack protector. The integrated I2C communication interface allows the bq77PL900 to also be used as an analog front end (AFE) for a host controller. Also included are two LDOs, one 5-V, 25-mA and one 3.3-V, 25-mA, which can be used to power host controllers or support circuits. The bq77PL900 integrates a voltage conversion system to extract battery parameters such as individual cell voltage and charge/discharge current. Variables such as voltage protection threshold and detection delay time can be programmed by using Internal EEPROM. The bq77PL900 can be used as a standalone standalone battery protection system (standalone mode). It can also be combined with a host microcontroller to provide fuel gauge or other battery management functions for the host system (host control mode). The bq77PL900 provides comprehensive safety protection for overvoltage, undervoltage, discharge overcurrent, and discharge short circuit. The bq77PL900 automatically turns off the FET drive when an EEPROM programmable safety threshold is reached. Protection functions can be configured without external components. An analog front end (AFE) output allows the host controller to observe individual battery voltages and charge/discharge currents. The analog-to-digital converter of the host controller is connected to the bq77PL900 to obtain these values. Cell balancing can be performed autonomously, or the host controller can activate it independently through the cell bypass path integrated into the bq77PL900. This operation is configured through internal control registers accessible through the I2C interface. The maximum balanced bypass current is set by the external series resistor and the internal FET on-resistance (typically 400 Ω). Optionally, external bypass cell balancing FETs can be used to increase current capacity.
