DC to DC converters are a type of power-conversion device that converts a DC input voltage to a different DC output voltage, allowing for optimized power delivery. The BRDS100 application field and working principle is an innovative DC-DC converter technology that provides an efficient, robust and flexible power solution for a wide variety of applications.

The BRDS100 operates by converting DC voltage to a custom-designed capacitor-diode bridge circuit that comprises ‘zero voltage switching’ in the input and output stages, making it more efficient when compared to traditional DC-DC converters. The ‘zero voltage switching’ method reduces the amount of power loss that typically occurs through the converter’s active components and allows for an efficient and low-noise transfer of power.

The BRDS100 converter architecture is based around a high frequency buck-boost type topology to reduce the system size and cost. It also utilizes synchronous rectification, meaning the output diode is replaced with low RDS(on) MOSFETs, thus improving system efficiency. Since the converter operates at high frequency, the external transformer is smaller in size.

It consists of a high-frequency pulse width modulation (PWM) controller, pre-biased output capacitor, a N-channel MOSFET, a pair of resistors and the main transformer. In addition, the BRDS100 PWM controller offers various protection features such as over-voltage, over-current, short-circuit and temperature protection.

In operation, the signal from the PWM controller is connected to the transformer primary coil and then connected to the pre-biased output capacitor. This creates a magnetic field which in turn induces a voltage in the secondary coil. The secondary voltage is then connected to the low side MOSFET which is activated by the PWM signal. The current is then passed from the capacitor to the load.

The PWM controller modulates the signal in order to regulate the output voltage as needed. This is done by altering the duty cycle and frequency of the PWM signal as needed. The duty cycle is regulated by comparison of the optimal output voltage with the actual voltage at the load. if the desired voltage is higher, the PWM will increase the duty cycle; if it is lower, it decreases the duty cycle accordingly.

The BRDS100 converter is designed to be a high-efficiency, low-cost solution to many of today’s DC-DC expansion needs.
