BSPD48DING, also known as the Bidirectional Silicon Protection Diode 48 Volt, is a new type of overvoltage protection device which includes both DC (direct current) and transient voltage suppression (TVS) elements. It provides efficient protection against transient overvoltage threats, such as electrostatic discharge (ESD), power-line surges, and inductive transients. This device is capable of blocking up to 48 volts in reverse bias conditions while still allowing forward current conduction at voltages up to 30 volts.

The application field and working principle of BSPD48DING covers a wide range of situations. The device is commonly used in automotive and industrial applications, as well as domestic environments. In automotive applications, the device is used for overvoltage protection in fuel systems, ignition systems, lighting systems, and electronic control units. The working principle of the BSPD48DING can be divided into two parts. The first part is the reverse protection diode. This is a solid state diode built with a special material which is designed to block up to 48 volts in reverse bias conditions while still allowing forward current conduction at voltages up to 30 volts. This diode activates when the voltage on the protected circuit exceeds the breakdown voltage of the diode and provides a low impedance path to ground that bypasses the sensitive components. The second part is the clamp diode. This diode provides overvoltage protection against transients by conducting high current pulses through its body and into a capacitor. This prevents high voltages from reaching the sensitive components.

By combining the two parts, the BSPD48DING provides a protection level that is higher than either part alone. Moreover, the device includes a series connected thermistor which provides temperature compensation to accurately adjust the protection level of the device. This thermistor acts as a voltage controlled resistor that is sensitive to heat. As the temperature rises, the thermistor resistance increases thus reducing the voltage and current which is allowed to pass through the protection diode and clamp diode.
