Thyristors - TRIACs is the ongoing development of SCR. It is a bi-directional triode ac switch that can be used to control two-way power flow. The BTA40-800B is an anode gate TRIAC, which is mainly used for AC or AC/DC circuit cells. It has wide applications and high versatility, with built-in anti-surge protection and temperature compensation circuits, suitable for automation and electronic equipment demanding precision, such as electric fans, lamps and lighting controls, electric motors, welding machines and other electric appliances.
The BTA40-800B consists of two thyristors connected back-to-back, making it capable of controlling current in both directions with one gate signal. Because it is a bidirectional semi-conductor switch, it can be applied to phase control, AC power switches and other switch applications. Its operating voltage range is 40V-800V, with a continuous operating current of 40A at 25 degrees Celsius, and has a speed of 1200V/us.
The working principle of the BTA40-800B is based on the principle of a thyristor. The TRIAC works like two SCRs connected back-to-back, with the two main components being a PNPN structure. The gate terminal of the TRIAC is used to control the flow of current by injecting gate current. When gate current is injected, the TRIAC will conduct current in both directions until the current drops back to zero, or the gate current is undone. The control of the TRIAC is basically the same with SCR’s, but it also can be triggered with both negative and positive voltage.
As applications for AC circuit cells, the BTA40-800B finds usage in many applications, such as power regulators, zero-cross detectors, speed controllers, etc. It is suitable for controlling resistive and inductive loads, such as resistive heating elements, motor control, etc. It enables the protection of motor from being overloaded and ensures working reliability in precision electric appliances.
