Thyristors - TRIACs

A TRIAC is a solid-state bidirectional three terminal active device which allows current to flow in both directions. It is a special kind of thyristor and is also called an SCR (silicon controlled rectifier). Unlike other thyristors, TRIACs can be triggered into conduction not just from a positive, but also from a negative directive. The OT410 and OT115 are two of the most commonly used TRIACs.

OT410

The OT410 is a 400V, 4A TRIAC which is widely used in triggering and controlling circuits and AC motor applications. This TRIAC is extremely easy to use and can be used as a switch or in a variety of circuits. Its maximum on-state current and gate trigger current are 4A and 2mA respectively.

OT115

The OT115 is a 1500V, 15A TRIAC, which is mainly used for AC High Power Motor control applications. It is a powerful TRIAC and can control much greater currents than the OT410. Its maximum on-state current and gate trigger current are 15A and 4mA respectively.

Application Field and Working Principle

The two TRIACs have similar operational characteristics, but the OT115 is usually preferred for applications that involve controlling bigger loads. Both TRIACs can be used as a switch in electrical circuits, as well as to control current. They work by passing a current between two different terminals, and by controlling the gate voltage.
