The BUF12800EVM is a motor control evaluation board from Texas Instruments (TI), designed specifically for determination of core loss in a wide range of 3-phase motors. The board enables testing of motor-control prototypes and comes with two connector interfaces to allow connection of a motor, power supply, modular function blocks (MFBs), or load simulator tester for investigations of motor control designs. To elaborate, BUF12800EVM’s working principle depends on the operation of its integrated BUF12800 high-power MOSFETs motor driver. This motor driver is built with low-loss MOSFETs and is suitable for various voltage levels, starting from 4.5Vdc – 18Vdc. It was built entirely to support the operation of integrated 3-phase motors such as permanent magnet (PM) with trapezoid-like 3-phase currents.BUF12800EVM can be set up for 6V DC to 48V DC in range and it supports motors that operate from 500W up to some 3KW.
The driver consists of three independently adjustable low side gates and three single high side gates. The high side gates are controlled by types N and NF MOSFETs hence providing greater drive flexibility across the circuit. The BUF12800 motor driver operates by providing needed voltage to the motor coils through its independent gate controls and a separate gate pulse that has been implemented.
To enable operation, BUF12800EVM also implements several circuit components including a resistor, capacitor and diode network with inherent protection (clamp) on the inputs and outputs. The included resistor adjusts the motor speed according to the applied voltage across the motor. The capacitor act as a means of eliminating high frequency noise and also serves as a buffer so that the applied voltage lasts longer. The diode network operates by discharging the loads energy whenever the motor is operated at a high speed.
BUF12800EVM also includes several adjustable and adjustable ports. The adjustable ports can be used to tweak the voltage applied to the motor as well as the motor\'s speed. The adjustable ports are designed to be able to provide the power needed by various motor types, ranging from a few hundred watts up to some 3KW. Finally, the board offers a push button enabling the user to troubleshoot the operation of the motor driver when an issue arises.
