BZG04-20-M3-18 Diodes - Zener - Single Application Field and Working Principle

After the breakdown point, a slight reverse bias (negative anode) will cause the diode to conduct reverse current, just like a normal diode. The reverse bias voltage will depend upon the load current and Vz. This process of allowing current to pass in the reverse direction when a reverse bias voltage is applied is called Zener breakdown. The diode can act as a voltage regulator, maintaining the voltage across the load constant.
Zener diodes have a high reverse breakdown voltage and are used to protect portable devices and equipment, consumer electronics, automotive and other applications from overvoltage transients. They have wide range of stability and can be used to create clamping and protective devices like voltage, current and temperature regulators, crowbar and other overvoltage protection devices.
