Application Field: The BZX84-B22,215 is a silicon planar power Zener diode with a cathode common type construction. This Zener diode has better Zener voltage regulation and lower dynamic impedance than the conventional axial-lead type.

The BZX84-B22,215 is mainly used as a regulator diode to provide a specified reference voltage with temperature and power supply variations, or as a protection diode if subjected to strong ESD.

Working Principle: The BZX84-B22,215 Zener diode works on the principle of Zener breakdown in a reverse bias direction. Zener breakdown is a condition when a high electric field is applied in a reverse bias across the PN junction. Under this condition, the electrons near the junction are accelerated in the electric field and when they collide with atoms, they cause a generation of electron-hole pairs and inject majority carriers (electrons) across the junction.

This current causes a voltage drop across the diode which is the Zener breakdown voltage. When the diode is in reverse bias and the voltage applied is higher than the Zener breakdown voltage, the electric field causes electrons & holes injection across the junction, which is sustained and known as Zener ACTION.

The BZX84-B22,215 Zener diode can work up to a maximum peak current of 5 mA and produces a voltage of 5.6 V. At the same time, it has a maximum breakdown voltage of 5.6V and maximum reverse leakage current of 60 µA.

The device is packaged in a standard TO-92 type case and is suitable for general applications such as voltage regulation and voltage limiting in portable, automotive and consumer electronics applications.
