Diodes - Bridge Rectifiers

CBRHDSH1-40L TR13 are self-contained bridge rectifiers. Bridge rectifiers allow for the easy conversion of an alternating current (AC) waveform into a direct current (DC) waveform in a localized area. They are the preferred type of rectifier for most electronic applications because of their ease of use, low cost and low power consumption.

Application Field

Bridge rectifiers are employed in a wide variety of electronic applications. Some of the most common are in motor controls and power supplies, DC power converters, battery chargers, DC motor speed control, switch mode power supplies, and low voltage lighting systems. Bridge rectifiers are also useful in RF applications due to their ability to reduce the effects of voltage ripple. Bridge rectifiers are one of the most common solutions for rectifying AC current to DC current.

Working Principle

Bridge rectifiers are composed of four diodes connected in a ‘Bridge’ configuration. This Bridge configuration is a symmetrical configuration with equal conduction paths and provides a low resistance path for the current to flow through. Bridge rectifiers are particularly useful in situations where it is not practical to use more than one diode, as is the case with amplifiers, motors, and other electronic components.

The Bridge configuration consists of two diodes arranged in a ‘base’ voltage configuration. The remaining two diodes are arranged in a ‘shunt’ configuration. The base configuration allows for the current to flow through two series paths when the voltage applied is greater than the forward voltage drop of the two series diodes. The shunting can be used to block direct current from overflowing back into the power source, thus affording protection.

The Bridge rectifier can be used in circuits where the AC power source is either a single phase or a full wave AC power source. When used with single phase AC sources, a single diode can be used to ‘clip’ half of the waveform, while a bridge rectifier will clip both halves of the waveform. This allows for a much more efficient conversion of AC power to DC power.

When used with a full wave AC power source, the bridge rectifier configuration can be changed in order to obtain either a full wave or half wave output. With the full wave configuration, both halves of the waveform will be rectified and converted to DC power. With the half wave configuration, only one half of the waveform will be rectified, resulting in a lower DC voltage.

The Bridge rectifier is one of the most commonly used components in electronics. They have proven their usefulness in a wide range of applications and can easily be tailored to meet the needs of virtually any type of circuit. Bridge rectifiers are relatively easy to use and require very low power consumption, making them an ideal choice for most electronic applications.
