Working Principle

Diodes are semiconductor devices that conduct current in one direction and block current in the other direction. When forward biased, the diode conducts current and is known as ‘forward biasing’. On the other hand, when reverse biased, it blocks current and is known as ‘reverse biasing’. The CD216A-B130LLF is a single type diode rectifier which works on a PN junction. The two layers of the junction (P-type and N-type layer) are connected to the anode and cathode of the diode respectively. The anode is connected to the positive voltage source and the cathode is connected to the negative voltage source.

The PN junction acts as a barrier for current flow. In the forward bias condition, when a positive voltage is applied at the anode, the electrons from the N-type material are collected by the P- type material, forming a small region of charge carriers (holes) in the P- type material. This region is called the depletion layer. Thus the electrons can now flow easily across the junction to the P- type material, allowing current to flow through the device. This is known as the forward biasing.

In the reverse bias condition, when a negative voltage is applied to the anode, the PN junction is pushed further away, forming a larger region of depletion layer which decreases the probability of charge carriers to cross the junction. This effectively blocks any current flow, making the diode act as an insulator. This is known as reverse biasing.
