CD631615B application field and working principle

CD631615B is a static switch product developed by British IXYS Corporation for automotive applications. It is designed for use in customer products that require external current sensing and switching in harsh environments.

CD631615B is a 1600V three-phase SCR full-bridge module with integrated external current sensing, over-current detection and maximum current limiting functions. It adopts two-stage over-current detection, with one stage over-current protection and the other stage maximum current limitation. It has the characteristics of low turnoff time and soft turn-off.

Application field:

CD631615B can be widely used in thermal management, such as EV/HEV power trains and electric power steering. It can also be used in welding machines, solar inverters, motor controllers, UPS, communication power supply, electric actuation and industrial automation.

Working principle:

CD631615B is a three-phase SCR full-bridge module, which consists of six SCRs arranged in two legs and a common cathode. The SCR turn-on process is controlled by a gate driver, which is responsible for extending the gate current from an internal power supply source.

When the gate voltage of the SCR is greater than its threshold voltage (typically 5-13V), the SCR will turn on, because the gate current can facilitate the formation of a conducting channel between the emitter and collector electrodes, enabling the load current to flow through the SCR. Once the SCR is turned on, the voltage across it drops to a few tenths of a volt and the load current flows through it.

When the load current reaches a certain pre- setpoint, the external current sensing feature in the CD631615B module detects it and sends the signal to an internal circuit. This internal circuit is triggered and the SCR is turned off. This process is repeated over and over again, until the current is shut off by an external device at the end of use.

CD631615B can also be used for over-current protection, which works similarly to over-voltage protection. An external current sense resistor is used to monitor the load current. Once the load current reaches the set level, the internal circuit is activated and the SCR is immediately turned off. This helps prevent excessive currents and potential damage to the device.
