In its working principle, CD74HC390M96 synchronous 4-bit binary counter consists of an up/down counter with a synchronous reset. It will reset itself to zero. It can also divide frequency to one-fourth of the original frequency and return it to its terminal if the count exceeds 8. Its time interval is obtained by counting a certain number of signal before switching over to the next stage. This does not ensure accuracy in all situations, and external compensation for temperature and voltage drift is sometimes required.
The diagram of CD74HC390M96 shows a flip-flop with a data in and a clock, which is used together to count. When the clock is applied, the data in is pushed through the flip-flop and is transmitted to the next stage. When the count reaches 16, the Q7 output will be reset to “0” and the count will start from the beginning again.
