Working Principle

The CHL8103-09CRT provides the dc-dc conversion and voltage regulation necessary in power conditioning applications such as laptops, notebooks, tablets, and other battery-powered products. It uses a synchronous rectification circuit to achieve high efficiency and low component count. The device includes a power-path management circuit to manage the battery charge/discharge protection. It also provides protection against current limit overshoot and thermal shutdown.

At the start of the circuit, the CHL8103-09CRT uses the input voltage (VBAT) to charge two capacitors (CSH and CS). When the csh capacitor reaches its voltage threshold, it triggers the enable pin (EN) and activates the power conversion stage. At this point, the CS capacitor is discharged and the output voltage is set. The output voltage is then regulated by an internal voltage regulator. The internal regulator is able to maintain the output voltage within a predetermined range despite changes in the input voltage.

In addition to voltage regulation, the CHL8103-09CRT is capable of providing short-circuit protection, current limit overshoot protection, and thermal shutdown. For short-circuit protection the device may enter a low duty cycle state, reducing the output voltage to nearly 0V. For current limit overshoot protection, the power conversion stage of the device is disabled, allowing the output voltage to float. And, for thermal protection, the voltage regulator is disabled, which also allows the output voltage to float.
