1. Describe

The LM5170PHPT controller provides the basic high voltage and precision components of a dual bidirectional converter. It regulates the average current flowing between the high and low voltage ports in the direction specified by the DIR input signal. Current regulation levels are programmed via analog or digital PWM inputs. A two-channel differential current sense amplifier and dedicated channel current monitor achieve a typical current accuracy of 1%. Powerful 5A half-bridge gate drivers capable of driving parallel MOSFET switches delivering 500 W or more per channel. The diode emulation mode of the synchronous rectifier prevents negative currents but also supports discontinuous mode operation for improved light load efficiency. Multifunctional protection features include cycle-by-cycle current limit, overvoltage protection for HV and LV ports, MOSFET fault detection, and thermal protection. An innovative average current mode control scheme maintains a constant loop gain, allowing a single R-C network to compensate for both buck and boost conversions. The oscillator is adjustable up to 500 kHz and can be synchronized to an external clock. Multiphase parallel operation is achieved by connecting two LM5170 controllers for 3 or 4 phase operation, or by synchronizing multiple controllers to a phase shifted clock for more phases. A low state on the UVLO pin disables the LM5170 in low current shutdown mode.
