Fixed inductors are used in almost all of our electronic projects and are essential components in some of the most important notions of electronics. The CLF5030NIT-470M-D is a fixed inductor with a maximum rated current of 5 amps (A) and an inductance of 0.47 ??H (microhenries). This component has multiple functions, as we will see in this section.
Application Field of CLF5030NIT-470M-D
The CLF5030NIT-470M-D is suitable for use in switch mode power supplies, battery-powered haversack regulators, voltage multipliers, snubber circuits, high-frequency transformers, and many other applications. In particular, the component is most widely used in power supplies that use a buck-type topology. This type of topology features a switch that rapidly switches on and off at a certain frequency to regulate the output voltage of the circuit, a process known as pulse-width modulation (PWM). As the switch rapidly changes the output voltage, it also generates electromagnetic waves, which are also known as EMI radiations. The CLF5030NIT-470M-D inductor is usually used in order to lower the EMI radiations.
Working Principle of CLF5030NIT-470M-D
The inductor is composed of two circuits, the input and the output (sometimes called the power and ground, respectively). The input circuit consists of a coil of copper wire and a ferromagnetic core, which serves as the inductor. The copper coil is wound around the core and when an electric current passes through the coil, a magnetic field is generated. This magnetic field induces a voltage into the output circuit, thus forming an inductor.
As the current in the input circuit passes through the coil, the core becomes magnetized and produces an electromagnetic field. This electromagnetic field has a “back emf” or an induced voltage on the output side of the inductor. This “back emf” or voltage is called inductor voltage, and is a function of the amount of current passing through the coil. This voltage, also known as inductance, is proportional to the number of turns on the coil.
When the current in the magnetically coupled inductors is pulsed, it produces a duty cycle in the voltage that switches between high and low points. This type of voltage pattern is also called a “ripple” and is generally used to limit the amount of voltage that goes to the load. The inductor can also be used to create a filter, where the ripple is filtered by the inductance to produce a clean, regulated voltage.
By using the CLF5030NIT-470M-D inductor, we can reduce the amount of EMI radiations generated from a power supply, and also provide a clean regulated voltage output. This type of inductor is also typically used in other applications such as snubber circuits, high-frequency transformers, voltage multipliers, and battery-powered haversack regulators.
