Thyristors - CLP200M Application Field and Working Principle

The CLP200M thyristor is a power semiconductor device used to control large amounts of power in various types of equipment. It has a wide range of applications and can be used in power failure protection to ensure smooth power transitions during outages, as well as used in high-voltage and high-current pulse generation, industrial heating and welding machines, and motor-control systems.A thyristor is a four-layer semiconductor device in which current flows through the device only when a voltage is applied across its gate-cathode junction. This is due to the fact that the thyristor’s gate-cathode junction is initially in a low resistance state, allowing current to flow. The device then changes to a high resistant state, blocking any further flow of current. The CLP200M Thyristor consists of a main body and two terminals, one being the gate where the control signal is supplied, and the other being the cathode. It has a maximum voltage rating of 2kV and a maximum current rating of 200A. It also has a reverse breakover voltage rating of 1.6V and a forward breakover voltage rating of 1.2V. The device has a high trigger gate current rating of 200 mA and a low trigger gate current rating of 4 mA.When the thyristor is in an off-state, it acts as an open switch and therefore limits current flow between the two terminals.
