Working Principle of the LED

CLU046 LED is a semiconductor element, its internal mechanism is similar to an ordinary diode known as a PN junction. By combining P type and N type semiconductors, the diode can be used to convert electrical energy into light energy. It works on the principal of electron motion.

The PN junction can be compared to a two-way valve, which allows electrons to move in either direction when sufficient voltage is applied. This creates a flow of electrons in one direction and a corresponding flow of holes in the other direction. When electrons move from the P side to the N side, a potential difference is created, and this allows current to flow. When this current flows through the PN junction, electrons and holes meet, forming a recombination junction. This releases energy in the form of light.
