Rotary Potentiometers, Rheostats, and the CLU1511E are three specific electrical components that are often considered synonymous; however, there is a distinct difference between them. This difference can be seen in the application fields and working principles of each component.
Rotary potentiometers are quite a common electrical component, they have an array of uses. A tantalum-carbon element is used at the core of a rotary potentiometer, forming a sliding contact between two static contacts. Rheostats, as opposed to potentiometers, do not have a third stationary contact which the wiper-effect contact will move in and out of. This means, rather, that the wiper-effect contact is used to vary the resistance in-between two static contacts. This resistance adjustment is either achieved by varying the distance between the two contacts, or by changing the electrical characteristics of the film material itself. This device is more powerful than a potentiometer but is essentially designed to perform the same tasks.
The CLU1511E, however, is a unique electrical component that operates in a very different manner than both potentiometers and rheostats. The device is an electromechanical transducer that stimulates its output in direct-proportion to an angular change in the control input shaft. This means that a voltage, or current, produced across its set of terminals is dependent on the rotational movement of its shaft. This makes the CLU1511E perfect for applications where precise angular control is required, allowing it to be used in such fields as motor and vehicle controls, robotics, and navigation systems.
In terms of its working principle, the CLU1511E utilizes an inductive pick-up element to provide an electrical output at two output pins. This electrical output is calibrated in angle, from 0-360 degrees. This device has only two static contacts, and no third wiper-effect contact, meaning that there is no variability of resistance from its output. Instead, the output of the CLU1511E is directly related to the angular movement of its shaft.
Although all three components - rotary potentiometers, rheostats, and the CLU1511E - appear outwardly similar, each device has different applications and unique working principles. Rotary potentiometers are commonly used as volume controls, whereas rheostats are designed to provide variable resistance in a circuit. Last but not least, the CLU1511E is used primarily for applications where precise angular control is necessary.
