Mica and PTFE CapacitorsMica and PTFE capacitors are a group of capacitors that utilize mica and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) materials as their insulative medium. These capacitors can be designed and manufactured in a variety of configurations and packaging sizes to meet both application specific and industry standard requirements. One of the most popular configurations is the CMR06F272JODM (or MCO), which is a 0.272uf Mylar-Polyphenylene Sulfide (MPS) capacitor.The CMR06F272JODM capacitor is designed for applications requiring high-voltage, high-speed switching, and DC-DC converter operation. It is capable of operating up to 600 volts and has a ripple current rating of 7A. Its physical size is that of a 10-pin SOT-223 package and it has 6 no-clean solder joints. The capacitor is surface mount device (SMD) and is sold in a tape and reel format.The CMR06F272JODM capacitor is constructed of metalized mica film dielectric which has an extremely low dissipation factor and a high dielectric strength. This metalized mica dielectric is then sandwiched between two layers of PTFE making the capacitor extremely thin and lightweight, while also allowing for efficient transfer of heat and allowing for a small form factor.The inner dielectric layer of the CMR06F272JODM capacitor is comprised of mica material, which is an environmental friendly dielectric and provides a low dissipation factor due to its high dielectric constant and excellent insulation properties. The mica layers are metalized on one side and come in multiple thicknesses. The thickness and type of metalized mica film used in this capacitor is selected based on the design requirements such as the capacitance value and the voltage rating required.The outer dielectric layer of the CMR06F272JODM capacitor is comprised of PTFE material, which is also an environmental friendly dielectric and provides excellent electrical properties due to its low dissipation factor, high dielectric strength and stability over a wide range of temperatures. This PTFE layer is coated with tin-lead or silver epoxy to provide additional protection from the environment and improve solderability.The capacitance value of the CMR06F272JODM capacitor is measured using a high voltage AC ripple current source that is used to measure the capacitance of the capacitor at various frequencies.
