Common Mode Chokes

Common Mode Chokes, commonly abbreviated as CMC, are essential components for use in the modern electronics industry. They are used to control disruptive voltages and currents within circuits. CMCs are vital for the functioning of electrical equipment, providing a safe and reliable way of regulating power flow in a circuit.The most basic CMCs, also known as CMT1-3-R CMCs, are constructed using three windings wound on the same core, with the windings arranged in a ring or coil formation. The number of windings depends on the capacity of the CMC, although three are the most common for CMCs of moderate capacity.As with other CMCs, CMT1-3-R CMCs may be used in a variety of applications, including AC and DC motor drives, AC and DC power supplies, solar energy systems, and medical equipment. In motor drives, they are used to reduce unwanted noise, improve electric motor efficiency, and isolate motor components. In power supplies, they provide isolation between power supply and load circuits, protect from overloading, and filter out unwanted noise created by the power supply. In solar energy systems, CMT1-3-R CMCs are used to reduce EMI and RFI interference. In medical equipment, they are used to reduce EMI and ESD induced noise.The working principle of CMT1-3-R CMCs is based on the idea of common mode voltage and current. Common mode voltage is the differential between two input voltages or between two output voltages, while common mode current is the sum of those two currents. Thus, CMT1-3-R CMCs are used to prevent the build-up of common mode voltages and currents. In a CMT1-3-R CMC, the three windings are arranged such that there is no coupling between the windings. This means that no current flows between them. This enables the CMC to act as an electric choke, blocking any current travelling in the common mode while allowing current of a specific frequency to pass through.The CMT1-3-R CMC also works in reverse, allowing current of a specific frequency to pass through while preventing any current travelling in the common mode. Thus, by blocking common mode current, the CMC is able to reduce noise created by the electric environment, allowing low interference operation.To further improve the filtering capability of CMT1-3-R CMCs, they are often used in conjunction with various other components such as varistors, inductors, capacitors, diodes, and switches. Each of these components brings something different to the filtering process, allowing improved filtering of unwanted noise.CMT1-3-R CMCs are designed to be used in a range of applications, providing reliable and low interference operation. They provide a simple and effective way of controlling common mode voltage and current, reducing noise created by electric systems, and improving the reliability of electrical equipment.
