Common Mode Chokes

Common mode chokes are a type of passive electronic components used to reduce or suppress common-mode noise on a signal line pair. Common mode chokes are also referred to as common mode filters, differential mode filters, EMC filters, EMI filters, etc. The CMT4-1-R is one of the most common types of common mode chokes.

CMT4-1-R application field and working principle

CMT4-1-R common mode chokes are used in various applications such as AC/DC power systems, electro-magnetic compatibility (EMC), communication systems, surge protection, lightning protection, and automotive power systems. The CMT4-1-R is designed to reduce common-mode noises on two or more signal lines. This type of common mode choke consists of a high-permeability ferrite core with four primary windings and a single feedback-winding. Each of the primary windings is wound with the same number of turns. The CMT4-1-R uses an arrangement of four primary windings and one feedback winding, as compared to the CMT2-1-R, which only uses two primary windings and one feedback winding.The CMT4-1-R works by suppressing common-mode noise on the signal line pair. It does so by introducing a high-impedance path for the common-mode noise, while providing a low-impedance path for the differential-mode signal. The feedback winding acts as an additional primary winding and increases the overall common-mode impedance of the CMT4-1-R. This allows the CMT4-1-R to provide greater attenuation of common-mode noise. The CMT4-1-R can also be used as a blocking transformer, to block the propagation of common-mode signals. The CMT4-1-R can also be used as an isolation transformer, to provide galvanic isolation of two signal lines. Due to its increased inductance and higher common-mode impedance, the CMT4-1-R can provide up to 35dB of common-mode noise-attenuation. This makes it ideal for applications where high-frequency noise needs to be effectively suppressed.The CMT4-1-R is also used in motor-control applications, to offer safer control of electrical motor drives and systems. It reduces the chances of transient overvoltage and otherelectrical disturbances that can cause damage or malfunctions in the motor drives. This type of common mode choke has also been used to reduce the problem of ground bounce in AC/DC power supplies.In summary, the CMT4-1-R is a widely used type of common mode choke, used to reduce or suppress common-mode noise and improve the signal quality in various applications.
