Common Mode Chokes (CMCs) are electromagnetic components designed to suppress Noise in power lines, electrical fields, and communications lines. CMCs are used in electronic applications ranging from low frequency filtering to high frequency data transmission. The CMX1616Z701B-10 is comprised of a ferrite core with a multilayer winding construction. This Common Mode Choke is capable of blocking differential mode currents while allowing common-mode currents to pass through.
The working principle of a CMX1616Z701B-10 Choke is based on the inductive behavior of the ferrite core and the multilayer winding construction. In a differential mode current, the two windings with opposite polarity exhibit equal flow of the current. This causes the current flow in both directions and from the outside, cause the magnetic field to be reduced. In a common mode current, the two windings exhibit the same polarity and the field is increased, causing an inductive effect.
The combination of the ferrite core and the multilayer winding construction results in increased common-mode impedance necessary to suppress EMI and reduce Noise. The inductive behavior also limits the rate of current, preventing damaging ripples and spikes that can cause power supply instability.
