TVS (transient voltage suppressor) are electrical components used to protect against surges caused by electrical storms, power outages, or from extreme voltage due to short circuits on the power input line. Varistors, also known as metal oxide varistors, are the most commonly used type of TVS. Varistors are two-terminal, non-linear voltage dependent resistor (VDR) devices that provide transient voltage suppression and transient current control. MOVs (metal oxide varistors) are a class of transient voltage suppressors (TVS) that provide protection to electronic systems from transient voltages. They are used to redirect excessive transient voltages to ground.

The CN1812L8G is a metal-oxide varistor (MOV) designed for surge and ESD protection. It has an array of eight varistors in a small SOD-123 package.
