Working Principle:

The CNC7S101 optoisolator is composed of a photovoltaic effect transistor, an LED, and a base-collector voltage limiter. The LED portion of the device emits light when it is illuminated by a voltage source, and the photovoltaic effect transistor detects the light. When a voltage applied to the base-collector voltage limiter exceeds a certain voltage rating, the base-collector voltage limiter will block the current from continuing to flow. This prevents the transistor from firing, and thus isolates the input and output signals.

The LED portion of the CNC7S101 is designed to respond to both AC and DC signals. As the name implies, when an AC signal is applied, the LED will flash and the photovoltaic effect transistor will generate a DC output voltage. This DC output voltage is then used to power the appropriate control circuit. The base-collector voltage limiter prevents excessive voltage levels from passing through the transistor and reaching the output.

The CNC7S101 optoisolator can be used to protect against transient signals. In this case, the optoisolator monitors the input signal and will block any voltage that exceeds its voltage rating.
