CNDS stands for Cellular Network Driving Simulator, also called Advanced Telematics Network Driving Simulator. Telematics refer to the study of the sending, receiving, and storing of information over radio or cellular networks. CNDS is an open-source platform designed for the purpose of automating cellular network-based driving. It has the capability to select different communication networks, analyze received power and coverage, calculate path losses, etc, and provide accurate simulation results.
CNDS works in three main areas: network performance evaluation, radio design optimization, and wireless communication research. Network performance evaluation involves using the simulation results to evaluate and improve network performance for larger coverage and improved connectivity. Radio design optimization includes using CNDS to model the radio environments, evaluate and optimize the network coverage and transmission path losses, and simulate the protocol operations.
Wireless communication research involves using CNDS to simulate wireless communication networks, investigate new possibilities, such as novel data service networks, cooperative networks, software-defined networks, and so on. By using different communication networks, parameters, and settings, we can explore the characteristics of those networks and build better networks.
CNDS is based on the 7-layer OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) network architecture model. This model consists of seven logical layers that describe the functions of a communication protocol. Each layer performs a different task. The Network Application layer is responsible for the user applications, while the Physical layer is responsible for the physical characteristics of the network’s communication. The Data link layer is responsible for providing the logical connection between network nodes, while the Network layer handles the routing of messages. The Transport layer is responsible for error recovery and flow control, and the Session layer manages sessions between applications. The Presentation layer is responsible for the conversion of data into formats accepted by application programs, while the Application layer is responsible for the interaction between end users and applications.
The aim of CNDS is to improve the efficiency and accuracy of wireless communication network simulations. It uses multiple computers to simulate the communication setup and the radio environment, and does not require license or authentication issues. The simulation tools are easy to use and powerful, providing realistic simulations quickly. Moreover, the generated results are accurate and reproducible. By using CNDS, realistic wireless scenarios can be developed and studied without the need for expensive radio hardware.
CNDS has been used in various areas, such as power line communication (PLC) and machine-to-machine (M2M) communication. In the area of PLC, CNDS can be used to evaluate the performance of power line networks for broadband communication by simulating signal propagation conditions in an actual radio environment, including Rayleigh scattering and noise. Likewise, it can be used to verify the performance of M2M communication technologies such as Long Term Evolution (LTE). In summary, CNDS offers a powerful and versatile platform for simulating and evaluating various wireless communication networks.
