A RF Directional Coupler is a passive device which, as its name implies, couples an amount of the input power which is dependent on the directivity and coupling factor of the device, to a second port which can be measured in order to calculate the port input power. The CP0603A0897MNTR is a miniature sized RF Directional Coupler that is specially designed for use in radio frequency (RF) and wireless related applications.
The CP0603A0897MNTR operates in a frequency range from DC to 6GHz with insertion loss of 0.5 dB or less, and directivity of 20 dB or better. It has maximum port VSWR of 1.6:1@ DC-3GHz, and 1.8:1@ 3-6GHz. Additionally, the power handling capability of this RF Directional Coupler is up to 10 W. It operates at a temperature range from -40 up to +85°C and has an impedance of 50 Ω. Its center frequency is 3 GHz with an RF connector of SMA. The center frequency of 3GHz has a low loss and high directivity due to the peculiar shape of the device. When a polarized power from a source and load are applied to the same port the power at the termination load will be greatly reduced due to the nature of the special dielectric material used in the device. This is called Coupling. This coupling is independent of frequency and the amount of power coupled is determined by the directivity of the device, which is usually measured as an isolation factor.
In order to measure the directivity, the source, load, and coupler are connected as shown in Figure 2. Coupled power is measured and compared to the power at the load port. This is known as the directivity of the RF Directional Coupler.

CP0603A0897MNTR’s working principle is based on constructive and destructive interference. Its working principle states that when an incident of power is focused into one port of the RF Directional Coupler, the incident energy is split into two parts; one part travels directly to the output port, while the other part is reflected back and is split further into two parts, one being the energy coupled to the coupled port and the other being the energy reflected from the coupled port towards the output port, where it combines with the output part. When two parts combine together, a constructive interference has been set up, thus providing low insertion loss, high directivity, and coupling factor.
The applications of the CP0603A0897MNTR device can be found in a wide variety of applications such as measuring the power of an RF signal, creating test signals, isolating signals from each other, splitting power, coupling feedback signal, and broadband signal monitoring.
