Rotary potentiometers and rheostats are two of the most common electrical components used in diverse applications. The Difference between a rotary potentiometer and a rheostat lies in their range of resistance; the former being fixed while the latter adjustable from zero to its maximum resistance. CU1031E is a variable resistor manufactured from a company called GE, which falls under the category of rotary potentiometer.
CU1031E is compact and robust, having just 4 pins to operate the component. While two pins control the slider and another pin as a ground, the remaining one is the output pin. Like other potentiometers, this component makes use of sliding contacts for its operation; the sliding contact being usually a wiper electrode which can be varied over the length of the resistive element. It is mounted with a rotatable knob or a lever actuated by the user in order to set the position of the wiper electrode. With a bottom housing removable slip-fit, CU1031E has a linear transition from one output voltage to another.
The other important feature of CU1031E is that it has a 10 turn option which provides smoother output adjustments than single turn units. It can be availed in 7 different custom shaft lengths with standard shaft lengths and also a choice of other mounting configurations. With an anti-static scratch-resistant VITON top coat, this component can easily resist the flux emitted from soldering torches and thereby reduce corona effect.
CU1031E along with its features, also has a wide range of applications. Linear and logarithmic adjustable voltage applications, sound systems, volume control, LED brightness controller and motor speed controllers are some of its usage areas. It is also employed for gain adjustment, time delay and calibration purposes. CU1031E as a rotary potentiometer, works on the linear principle. When the user rotates the knob or the lever, the wiper contact is made to move along the surface of the resistive element on which it has been installed. As the distance between the wiper and the fixed contact changes during rotation, the resistance value also changes simultaneously. All this happens in a linear format as the wiper progresses from the bottom contact to the top contact. The resistance value is funneled to the output pin for further process.
