The CWR26HK226MBGZ\TR is a tantalum capacitor designed for applications requiring high volumetric efficiency and low ESR, such as high-frequency DC-DC converters and other switching power supplies. The construction of a tantalum capacitor consists of a tantalum anode and a metal (typically manganese dioxide, or MnO2) cathode. The tantalum anode is formed by sintering a powdered tantalum material in a ceramic body. The MnO2 cathode is then formed as a layer coated on top of the tantalum anode. The two sides are separated by a dielectric layer, typically a tantalum oxide. This is an electrically insulating material which prevents the anode from coming into direct contact with the cathode.

The capacitance of a tantalum capacitor is determined by the area of the tantalum anode and the thickness of the dielectric layer. As voltage is applied across the two terminals, the tantalum anode is charged with electrons, which in turn causes an electric field to form in the dielectric layer. This electric field causes the electrons to be attracted to the oppositely charged MnO2 cathode and, in turn, creates an electrical bridge between the two sides.

The higher the amount of applied voltage, the higher the capacitance of the capacitor. The dielectric strength of the capacitor is also determined by the thickness of the dielectric layer. Generally, the thicker the dielectric layer, the higher the dielectric strength of the capacitor. Additionally, the capacitance of a capacitor is sensitive to temperature; with higher temperatures resulting in lower capacitance values.
