CY2292F is a Clock Generator, PLL, and Frequency Synthesizer from Cypress Semiconductor. It is designed to generate clock signals for use in high-speed DSP, communications, and computer CPUs in an efficient and low-power design. The CY2292F is capable of generating two separate clock signals, one for the system clock and one for the CPU clock, from a single reference clock. The two clock signals can be independently adjusted for frequency and duty cycle.
The CY2292F is based on a patented spread-spectrum technology designed to suppress electrical-noise emissions in clock generation circuits. Specifically, it adjusts the outgoing waveform in a controlled, linear manner over a wide range of frequencies to reduce EMI. On the output side of the CY2292F, there are two synchronized clock outputs, each with a maximum frequency of 150 MHz. The CY2292F operates on a 3.3V DC supply, and accepts a wide range of clock inputs from 4-30MHz. The minimum input frequency is 4 MHz, while the maximum frequency is limited by the output frequency of the particular clock device. It supports various synchronous and asynchronous clock protocols, and it has a built-in Select-to-Start switch that allows the user to select between operating modes. Additionally, the CY2292F features an adjustable spread percentage from 0.5%-10%, as well as a wide range of output frequencies from 8 KHz to 150 MHz.
The CY2292F’s working principle is based on the Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) technology. In this type of circuit, a variable-frequency clock is compared to a reference clock of known frequency. A phase-detector then detects the difference in the two frequencies and generates a signal to the VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator) which causes its output frequency to be adjusted until the two frequencies are the same. Once this occurs, the VCO output is locked to the reference clock frequency. The CY2292F includes an internal voltage regulator to ensure that its VCO is supplied with a stable voltage.
