Snap Action, Limit Switches
A D2T-LT1 type snap–action, limit switch senses the position by mechanical actuation of a spring-loaded actuator as force is applied to it. When the object or material cycles through the machine and touches the switch, the actuator trips and causes a “snap” action indicating that contact has been made. The second contact is normally open (N/O) normally closed (N/C) type. Once the material travels by, the switch resets and the contacts go back to either open or close.
Applications
Snap–action, limit switches are considered to be reliable, accurate and efficient switches for the use in a wide range of applications. These applications include those found in machine tooling, conveyors, packaging equipment, production robots, labelers, and ovens, just to name a few. Most often, they are used as a stop switch on conveyors to move objects through a particular area of the line. They can also be used to detect the presence of an object and send out alarms when certain objects are not found in certain locations as well as count the number of objects passing through an area without interruption.
Working Principle
A snap–action, limit switch is a simple mechanical device that contains several components: the actuator, the trigger block, the armature, and the contacts. The actuator is a spring-loaded plunger that trips when pressure is applied. It is what moves the entire switch mechanism when it is activated. The trigger block carries out a rotating movement as the plunger pushes it. It moves a lever so as to allow the armature to snap its contacts open or closed. The armature is the main movement piece of the switch. When the actuator plunger trips, it causes a rotating movement in the trigger block. This causes the armature to snap its contacts open or closed accordingly. Finally, the contacts consist of two pieces: the N/O and N/C contacts. The N/O contact opens when the current flows, while the N/C contact closes.
In conclusion, snap–action, limit switches are versatile and reliable in a range of applications. They are easy to use and require little maintenance, making them ideal for many applications. With their set of easily adjustable components, they can be tailored to fit almost any job.
